NYPD gives tickets for standing in bike lanes!

The NYPD changed my perspective this morning. Now I know some of them are giving out tickets to drivers who stop, stand, and park in bike lanes. I also learned that I shouldn’t jump to conclusions about what I see in the street. The officer who didn’t know about bike lane laws two days ago was probably a cadet. Obviously cars blocking bike lanes are still a huge problem. You can see a taxi pulled over into the bike lane while the cop was sitting there, which means they have no knowledge or fear of the law. But at least this officer is doing his job, despite the heat. Thank you officer.

We have an uphill battle against cars encroaching on bike lanes. If cyclists were empowered to give drivers tickets for endangering us in bike lanes, we would be safer. Legions of cyclists would police our own space. Indeed we have the greatest incentive to make sure drivers respect bike lanes…our lives.
